What does Microphone Test do?
Test your microphone with a live input meter, so you can see whether it is picking up your voice and whether the level is too quiet or clipping. It lists every input device, shows a real-time waveform, and lets you record a short clip and play it back to hear yourself as others hear you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is my audio uploaded anywhere?
No. The stream is processed by your browser inside this page, and any recording you make is held in memory on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and closing the tab discards it.
The meter does not move — what is wrong?
Usually the wrong input device is selected, the microphone is muted in hardware, or the system input volume is at zero. Check the device list here first, then your operating system sound settings.
What level should I aim for?
Normal speech should peak around −12 to −6 dB, which is the upper part of the green band. Constantly hitting 0 dB means clipping and distortion; sitting near the bottom means listeners will strain to hear you.
Why do I sound different in the playback?
When you speak, you hear your voice partly through bone conduction, which adds low frequencies a microphone never captures. The recording is what everyone else has always heard.
