Frequently Asked Questions
How much should I tip?
It varies enormously by country. Tipping is expected at 15–20% in the United States, is optional and modest in much of Europe, and can be considered rude in Japan. Check local custom — the calculator does whatever percentage you choose.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Etiquette guides generally say pre-tax, since the tax is not part of the service. Many people tip on the total for simplicity. The calculator supports both.
What if a service charge is already included?
Then a tip is optional on top. Check the bill for wording such as "service charge" or "gratuity included" before adding more.
How does rounding work?
Rounding up adjusts each person’s share to the next whole currency unit and shows the small extra that adds to the tip, which keeps the split simple in cash.
