Frequently Asked Questions
How do I work out the tax inside a total?
Divide the total by (1 + rate ÷ 100) to get the net, then subtract. A $107.25 total at 7.25% is $100 net and $7.25 tax.
Is tax charged before or after a discount?
After. Tax applies to the amount actually paid, so a discount reduces the taxable base. The optional discount field applies in that order.
What rate should I use?
That depends entirely on your jurisdiction and the product category, and in the US it can vary by city. This calculator applies whatever rate you enter — it does not look rates up.
Does this handle compound taxes?
Run it twice. Enter the first tax, then feed the resulting total in with the second rate. That is how compound taxes such as a provincial tax on top of a federal tax are stacked.
