Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate a 20% discount?
Multiply the price by 0.80. A £45 item at 20% off costs £36, saving £9. In general, multiply by (100 − discount) ÷ 100.
Is "30% off then 20% off" the same as 50% off?
No, and this is the most common shopping mistake. The second discount applies to the already-reduced price, giving 0.7 × 0.8 = 0.56, so you pay 56% — a 44% discount overall.
How do I find the original price from a sale price?
Divide the sale price by (100 − discount) ÷ 100. A £36 item at 20% off started at 36 ÷ 0.8 = £45. Switch the calculator to reverse mode to do this automatically.
Is the discount applied before or after tax?
In almost every jurisdiction the discount comes first and tax is charged on the reduced price. The calculator follows that order and shows both subtotals.
