Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a percentage decrease?

Subtract the new value from the old one, divide by the old value, then multiply by 100. From 200 to 150: (200 − 150) ÷ 200 × 100 = 25%.

Can a decrease be more than 100%?

Not if the values are positive. Reaching zero is a 100% decrease, and you cannot lose more than the whole amount. A result above 100% means the new value went negative.

Why does a 20% rise then a 20% fall not return to the start?

Because the fall is calculated on the larger number. 100 rises to 120, then a 20% fall takes off 24, leaving 96. You need a 16.7% rise to undo a 20% fall.

Is percentage decrease the same as a discount?

The maths is identical. "Discount" usually means the reduction is applied to a price, so the discount calculator adds price-specific outputs such as the amount saved.
