Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a percentage increase?

Subtract the old value from the new one, divide by the old value, then multiply by 100. From 50 to 65: (65 − 50) ÷ 50 × 100 = 30%.

What if the new value is smaller?

The result is negative, which means it is a decrease. Use the percentage decrease calculator if you want the answer stated as a positive drop.

Why can I not just add the percentages together?

Because each change applies to a different base. A 10% rise followed by another 10% rise is a 21% rise overall, not 20%, since the second rise is calculated on the already-increased amount.

How do I increase a number by a percentage?

Multiply by (1 + percent ÷ 100). To add 18% to 450: 450 × 1.18 = 531. The second mode on this page does exactly that.
