Frequently Asked Questions

How do I write an amount on a cheque?

Use currency mode. It produces the conventional wording — "one lakh twenty-five thousand rupees and fifty paise only" — with "only" at the end, which prevents anyone appending to the amount.

What is the difference between the two scales?

Digit grouping. The Indian system groups the first three digits then in twos — 1,00,000 is one lakh. The international system groups in threes — 100,000 is one hundred thousand. One crore is ten million.

How are decimals spoken?

Digit by digit after the word "point", so 3.14 is "three point one four". That is the standard convention and avoids the ambiguity of "three point fourteen".

Is it "one hundred and one" or "one hundred one"?

British English includes "and", American English usually omits it. This converter uses the shorter form without "and", which is accepted in both and is the norm on financial documents.
