A leap year is divisible by 4, except century years, unless also divisible by 400.

  • The rule exists because the solar year is 365.2422 days. Skipping three leap days every 400 years keeps the calendar accurate to within a day per 3,200 years.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the leap year rule?

A year is a leap year if divisible by 4, except years divisible by 100, unless also divisible by 400. So 2024 yes, 1900 no, 2000 yes.

Why do we need the century exception?

Because the solar year is 365.2422 days, not 365.25. Adding a day every four years overcorrects by about 11 minutes a year. Skipping three leap days every 400 years brings the calendar back to within a day per 3,200 years.

When is the next leap year?

Leap years fall every four years — 2028, 2032, 2036 and so on. The next century exception is 2100, which will not be a leap year despite being divisible by 4.

What happens to 29 February birthdays?

Legally it varies. Most jurisdictions treat 1 March as the birthday in common years for age-of-majority purposes, though some use 28 February. Our age calculator uses the 1 March convention.
