How are sentences detected?
By splitting on full stops, question marks and exclamation marks that are followed by whitespace or the end of the text, with a list of common abbreviations excluded so "Dr. Smith" is not two sentences.
What is a good average sentence length?
15–20 words for general writing. Above 25 the reader has to hold too much in mind at once. Varying the length matters as much as the average — a run of same-length sentences reads as monotonous.
Does it handle abbreviations correctly?
Mostly. Titles, e.g., i.e., etc. and common business abbreviations are recognised. Unusual abbreviations followed by a capital letter may still be miscounted — no rule-based splitter is perfect.
Why does my count differ from Word?
Different tools apply different rules to ellipses, quoted sentences, headings and list items. Differences of a few percent on a long document are normal.
