What does Character Counter do?

Count characters precisely, with and without spaces, and see how much room is left against the limits that matter — meta descriptions, tweets, SMS segments, Instagram captions and LinkedIn posts. Emoji count as one character, as platforms count them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do spaces count as characters?

Yes, on every platform that enforces a limit. Both totals are shown because some academic and print requirements are specified without spaces.

How many characters does an emoji use?

One as far as social platforms are concerned, but up to 11 bytes in UTF-8 and several UTF-16 code units. Family and skin-tone emoji are sequences of several code points joined together. The tool shows the grapheme count and the byte length separately.

Why does my SMS split into several messages?

A plain GSM-alphabet SMS holds 160 characters. Adding one character outside that alphabet — a curly quote, an emoji, an accented letter — switches the message to Unicode encoding and drops the limit to 70 per segment.

What is the ideal meta description length?

Around 150–160 characters. Google truncates by pixel width rather than character count, so the SERP snippet preview tool gives a more precise answer.
