What favicon sizes do I actually need?

A 32 × 32 PNG covers desktop browsers, 180 × 180 covers Apple touch icons, and 192 × 192 plus 512 × 512 cover Android and PWA installs. The 16 × 16 is still used in some bookmark lists. This tool generates all of them.

Do I still need an .ico file?

Rarely. Every current browser accepts PNG favicons. An ICO at /favicon.ico is only needed for very old Internet Explorer versions and some feed readers that probe that exact path.

What image should I start from?

A square PNG or SVG export at 512 × 512 or larger, with a simple bold mark. Fine detail and small text vanish at 16 pixels — test the preview before committing.

Where do the files go on my site?
