Frequently Asked Questions
How do I add fractions with different denominators?
Convert both to a common denominator, add the numerators, then simplify. 1/3 + 1/4 becomes 4/12 + 3/12 = 7/12. The calculator shows this intermediate step.
How do I divide fractions?
Multiply by the reciprocal — flip the second fraction and multiply. 2/3 ÷ 4/5 becomes 2/3 × 5/4 = 10/12 = 5/6.
What is an improper fraction?
One where the numerator is larger than the denominator, such as 7/4. It can be written as the mixed number 1 3/4. Both forms are shown for every answer.
How are fractions simplified?
By dividing both numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor, found with the Euclidean algorithm. 18/24 has a GCD of 6, giving 3/4.
