What happens to transparent areas?

JPEG cannot store transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with the background colour you choose — white by default. If transparency matters, convert to WebP instead, which keeps the alpha channel and is still small.

How much smaller will the JPG be?

For photographs saved as PNG, typically 80–95% smaller. For screenshots, logos and flat-colour graphics the saving is much less, and the JPEG will look worse — those should stay PNG.

Is the conversion reversible?

No. JPEG discards detail permanently. Converting back to PNG produces a lossless copy of the already-degraded image, not the original. Keep your PNG if you may need to edit later.

Why does my text look blurry after converting?
