Frequently Asked Questions
Can a blurred image be un-blurred?
Not from the exported file. The blur is applied to the pixel data itself and the original information is destroyed. This is different from a blur applied as a layer in a document, which can be removed.
Is blur strong enough to hide text?
Only at a high radius. Light blur on short text — a six-digit code, a number plate — can sometimes be recovered by specialised techniques. For anything genuinely sensitive, use the solid-fill redaction mode instead.
How do I blur just a face?
Switch to region mode and drag a rectangle over the face. You can add several rectangles for group photos. Everything outside the rectangles stays sharp.
Does this remove metadata as well?
Yes, as a side effect. The image is redrawn on a canvas and re-encoded, so EXIF including any GPS coordinates is not carried into the exported file.
