Use SVG for print — the bars stay perfectly sharp at any size, which matters because most scanning failures come from low print resolution or a missing quiet zone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which barcode type should I use?

EAN-13 for retail products outside North America, UPC-A inside it, ITF-14 for shipping cartons, and Code 128 for internal tracking where you control both ends. Code 39 is older and less dense but very widely readable.

Can I invent my own EAN number?

Not for retail sale. EAN and UPC numbers are allocated by GS1, and retailers verify them. Making one up risks colliding with a real product. For internal use, Code 128 has no registration requirement.

What is a check digit?

A final digit calculated from the others so scanners can detect a misread. EAN-13 uses a weighted sum modulo 10. This tool computes it for you, and flags a mismatch if you supply one.

Why will my printed barcode not scan?

Usually it is too small, printed at low resolution, or lacks the quiet zone of blank space at each end. Use the SVG output so bars stay crisp, and keep the contrast high — black on white scans best.
