Frequently Asked Questions
Which UTM parameters are required?
utm_source and utm_medium at minimum — without both, analytics tools often fail to attribute the visit as a campaign. utm_campaign is strongly recommended; term and content are optional.
Are UTM values case-sensitive?
Yes, and this is the single biggest cause of messy campaign reports. "Facebook" and "facebook" become two separate sources. The builder lowercases everything by default to prevent it.
Should I use UTMs on internal links?
No. Internal UTM links start a new session and overwrite the original acquisition source, so you lose the record of how the visitor actually found you. Use event tracking for internal clicks instead.
What should utm_medium be?
The channel type, not the specific site: email, cpc, social, referral, affiliate, display. Keeping medium to a small controlled vocabulary is what makes channel reports usable.
Links are built in your browser and never transmitted. The recent-links history is stored in your own browser storage and can be cleared at any time.
