What does Compress PDF do?

Shrink a PDF by rewriting it with object streams, removing redundant metadata and unused objects, and optionally rasterising pages at a resolution you choose for image-heavy scans. Before and after sizes are shown so you can decide if the trade is worth it.

How to Use Compress PDF

Key Features

  • Lossless structural optimisation using object streams
  • Strips document metadata and unused objects
  • Optional rasterise mode for scanned documents, with a DPI and quality control
  • Before and after size with the percentage saved
  • Honest reporting when a file is already close to its floor

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my PDF barely get smaller?

Because it was already efficient. A text-only PDF is mostly compressed font and content streams with little slack. The big wins come from documents carrying large embedded images, duplicated resources or heavy metadata.

What does rasterise mode do?

It renders each page to an image at a DPI you choose and rebuilds the PDF from those images. Scans shrink dramatically, but text stops being selectable and searchable — so use it only for documents that were already images.

Will compression change how the document looks?

Not in lossless mode — the visible content is identical. In rasterise mode the appearance depends on the DPI you pick; 150 DPI is fine on screen, 300 DPI is closer to print quality.

How do I get a PDF under an email attachment limit?

Try lossless first. If that is not enough, use rasterise at 150 DPI with 70% quality, or split the document and send it in parts.
